The police on Thursday seized papers of properties worth Rs.50 crore falling outside Bihar from Mantu Yadav, brother of Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA Surendra Yadav. The police however failed to net Mr. Mantu Yadav, suspected to be behind the hooch death in Gaya that claimed 12 lives.

Armed with a search warrant issued by the court of the Gaya Chief Judicial Magistrate, the police raided Mr. Mantu Yadav’s Bindi market complex, which also includes his residence, and seized the property papers, Superintendent of Police Akhtar Hussain said.

Mr. Hussain said the properties included houses in Delhi, Goa and Uttarakhand. A gun and several rounds of ammunition were also recovered from his house. The market and the house have been sealed.

Cases have been lodged against Mr. Mantu Yadav and others for selling spurious liquor.

A large quantity of illicit liquor was seized during a search of Mr. Mantu Yadav’s godowns. The seized liquor allegedly matched the pouches containing spurious liquor recovered from the houses of the victims.

The hooch tragedy in Gaya district was the second incident in the State in the past one week after 20 persons died due to consumption of illicit liquor in the adjoining Bhojpur district. — PTI
