Two persons involved in the theft of Rs. 4.72 lakhs from the chest of reservation counter of the Berhampur railway station were arrested by the personnel of the Government Railway Police (GRP).

The arrested persons were Srikant Pani of Pandara Street in the old town area and Chittaranjan Sahu of Khajuria area. The railway police seized Rs. 69,500 from their possession.

According to the police, both of them were brokers who used to extort money from passengers in the name of arranging reservation in trains. Interrogation of the arrested revealed that two other persons were also involved in the case. Search is on to nab the other two accused in the case.

The theft occurred on July 13 night. The four accused had hidden in the darkness under the staircase that led to the reservation counter on the first floor of the station building. When the staff of the reservation counter left the premises after locking up its gate at around 10 p.m., the four had entered the counter to break open the chest and take out the cash in it. To escape out, the accused had cut down the locked grill. It was astonishing that they had done all this while the railway station was agog with activity throughout the night.

As per the information provided by the arrested persons, they had not counted the amount they had stolen. The two others, who are yet to be nabbed, had escaped leaving behind around Rs. 1 lakh with them. They had shared the stolen money among them on July 13 night.
