The 102{+n}{+d}birth anniversary of Raghunath Prasad Padhi, who was a bureaucrat and Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University, was celebrated in the city on Thursday. Governor S.C. Jamir was the chief guest on the occasion. Ministers — Surya Narayan Patra and Badri Narayan Patra — former Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu, Berhampur MLA R.C.C. Patnaik, and Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University J.K. Mohapatra attended the programme. Family members of Raghunath Padhi, who included several former bureaucrats and police officials of the State, were present.

The programme was organised by Mahan Sangha, a philanthropic organisation of the city.

During the programme, three former Vice-Chancellors of the university — Revati Charan Dash, Apditya Prasad Padhi, and M.Q. Khan — were honoured by the Governor for their contribution to the development of the university.

In his address, Mr. Jamir spoke about the illustrious career of Raghunath Prasad, who, despite several stumbling blocks, had excelled in academics and as an IAS officer. He also spoke about the tenure of Raghunath Prasad as Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University. Raghunath Prasad also worked as Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan University, he added.

Mr. Jamir said higher education played a major role in the development of the country. He called upon universities to extend the frontiers of knowledge.
