PUDUCHERRY: For the first time ever, the town will play host to a marathon. The Puduvai Marathon 2010 will be held on February 14, from 6 a.m. onwards, commencing at India Gandhi Stadium, Uppalam. Organised by the Rotary Club of Pondicherry and Marg Swarnabhoomi, the theme of the marathon is ‘Go Green. Save the Earth.’

The objective of the marathon is to spread awareness about global warming, which is a burning issue today, said Alphonse Ligouri, Chairman of the marathon organising committee. Around 3000 runners are expected to participate, he added. Film stars are expected to participate as well.

The marathon will be held for runners of four categories: men will run a 14 km marathon circuit, and be eligible for Rs.15,000 as first prize, Rs.10,000 as second prize, and Rs.4000 as third prize, and consolation prizes of Rs.1000 each. Women will run a seven km circuit, to win Rs.10,000 as first prize, Rs.7,000 and Rs.4000 as second and third prizes respectively. Boys and Girls under 14 years of age will compete in a seven km marathon under separate categories and be eligible for prizes too. Prizes worth a total of Rs.1 lakh will be given out.

Participants are expected to register for the event before hand for free, at any of 40 locations in the town, where banners for the marathon are hung, Mr. Ligouri said.

The first 2000 pre-registered participants arriving at the venue will receive free T-shirts and caps. Over 1000 tree saplings will also be given out, a press release said.

Mr. Ligouri also requested people to participate in a voluntary ‘Lights Off’ campaign between 8 p.m. and 8.05 p.m. on February 13, to spread awareness about global warming.
