155 works at an estimated cost of Rs. 133 lakh are pending
PUDUCHERRY: Long-pending civic works of the Puducherry Municipality, including improvement of roads, laying of cement concrete pavements, construction of toilets and roadside gardens have been taken up in several areas. While most of the works are under progress, a few are in the process of tender finalisation.
According to officials, the ongoing works were proposed in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. They were taken up with grants from the government and Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development funds, an official said.
“The municipality will take up new works after completing the pending works. There are around 250 works taken up per year,” he said. At the last council meeting held in May, the officials said a total of 155 works were pending at an estimated cost of Rs. 133 lakh. The ongoing road works include improvement to roads at Shanthi Nagar extension in Nellithope, internal roads at Sithananda Nagar, Surcouf Street from NSC Bose Salai to Dumas Street, Kargil Nagar in Velrampet, Vysial Street from Anna Salai to Ambour Salai and Sri Kumaran Nagar in 100 Feet Road.
The municipality is laying cement concrete roads at Montorsier Street on eastern side of Bharathy Street, Masimagam Street from Akkasamy Madam Street to Varathavalli Mariamman Koil Street in Muthialpet, Bharathy Street (from Montorsier Street to Savarirayalu Street), Bharathy Street from Bussy Street to Montorsier Street, New Colas Nagar and other areas.
Sprucing up several areas in the municipal limits, works to construct roadside gardens at Savarirayalu Street, around Government General Hospital at Saint Ange Street and Victor Simonal Street, Ellamman Koil Street and at the junction of Bharathi Street and Candappamudaliar Street, Suffren Street and Subbiah Salai junction would begin soon.
The municipality had also taken up construction of toilet block at Roadiarpet, Uppalam, Ignacy-Maistry Street and improvement works at the toilet block at Kennady Nagar. To improve the infrastructure of existing markets, the local body was carrying out improvement works at the Nellithope market at the cost of Rs. 4.09 lakh and at the vegetable market in Petit Bazaar at the cost of Rs. 10.65 lakh.
The municipality was constructing cement concrete pavements at various roads, community halls, anganwadi buildings and infrastructure development works at burial grounds.
