PUDUCHERRY: Home Minister E. Valsaraj has reiterated the government’s resolve to implement the ban on plastic items in the Union Territory from July 1.
He was delivering an inaugural address at a World Environment Day programme organised by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment and the Puducherry Pollution Control Committee here on Friday. The theme for this year’s programme was ‘Your planet needs you – Unite to combat climate change.’
Mr. Valsaraj, who also holds the science, technology and environment portfolio, said dumped plastics that clogged stormwater drains led to floods last year. Implementation of the ban in a small Union Territory like Puducherry should be easy.
The Department of Science, Technology and Education already had an afforestation programme in place that needs the support of people. Mr. Valsaraj implored the public to dispose garbage properly and keep their surroundings clean, so that Puducherry becomes a model town. Students from several government schools attended the programme.
The director of School Education, S. Sundaravadivel, spoke about the role of students in preserving environment. Mr. Valsaraj released the Puducherry Annual Environment Survey Report. A debate on ‘Cause of environment degradation – Science or ignorance?’ was also conducted.
