BHUBANESWAR: The Nationalist Congress Party’s Orissa unit on Thursday demanded a CBI inquiry into the waiver of loans of Rs. 2,300 crore of IMFA-ICCL Group by various nationalised banks.

At a press conference here, NCP leader Bijoy Mohapatra said the role played by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the matter should be probed by the CBI.

"We are not saying anything about the petition pending before the High Court, but the matter needs to be investigated," Mr. Mohapatra said.

"How can a company be given a waiver of crores of rupees when it was difficult for a farmer to get a waiver of even one rupee" he queried. Meanwhile, responding to media reports, the company said it had always maintained transparency in its dealings and would respond to the public interest petition with all facts.
