A man and his son, allegedly involved in a case of honour killing of a pregnant unmarried girl, were arrested by the personnel of Berhampur Sadar police station on Thursday.
Giving details of the case to newsmen here, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Subash Acharya and inspector in charge of Sadar police station Aditya Sethi said the investigation related to recovery of the body of a pregnant girl in August revealed the case of ‘honour killing’. The arrested were Ujala Bisoi (60) and his son Purna Chandra Bisoi (29) of Aonlaguda village under Digapahandi police station.
The body of the victim, Sunita Bisoi (25), was found near Tikarpada canal under Sadar police station on August 31. She was hacked by some sharp weapon. Post-mortem examination revealed that she was around six months pregnant at the time of her death.
Neither Ujala nor Purna had come out to ascertain the identity of the deceased although news about the recovery of the body appeared in a section of the press. The father-son duo tried to suppress their act. As Sunita was missing from home since August 30, and they were facing questions from fellow villagers regarding the missing girl, Ujala had given some false information to suppress their involvement. Ujala had claimed that Sunita had suffered from cancer and had died during treatment in MKCG medical college hospital. They also stated that the body was cremated in Puri. Two weeks ago, Ujala and Purna also held a funeral feast for Sunita at the village, the police said.
But detailed investigation proved that Ujala and Purna murdered Sunita. She had relations with a person and got pregnant.
Ujala and Purna had come to know about it when she complained of stomach pain. But as she was six months pregnant no doctor was ready to conduct abortion. Ujala decided to kill his daughter. He made his son Purna help him.
According to the police, Ujala took Sunita with him to a spot near Balipada in the name of taking her to a relative’s house. Purna reached the spot on a cycle to avoid suspicion. While Purna had watched over, the old man allegedly hacked his pregnant unmarried daughter to death with a sword. Later, they threw the body into the Tikarpada canal and escaped from the spot. After that they made all possible efforts to suppress the killing.
