90 booking offices to be closed on June 13

Pondicherry: All privately owned trucks and goods vehicles will be off the roads for 24 hours from 6 a.m. on June 13 here. .

The president of the Pondicherry Goods Transporters Association R. Eluamalai told news persons on Saturday that the strike was to mark the Association's united protest against the recent price hike of petrol and diesel and in response to the call given by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC).

Criticising the government for frequently hiking prices, Mr. Eluamalai and other office bearers P. Muthukumarasamy and Jayaraman said as many as 90 booking offices in Pondicherry would remain closed on the day of the strike.

The closure of booking offices and keeping vehicles off the roads for a day would happen countrywide on June 13 at the instance of the AIMTC.

They said the rise in prices should be withdrawn as consumers were being held to ransom.

Lorry owners were sore over the government's whimsical approach in jacking up the prices of fuel despite successive protests by lorry owners.
