CUTTACK: The decision to merge one of the oldest post offices of the city located on the Barabati stadium premises here with General Post Office (GPO), Buxibazar was kept in abeyance on Wednesday following a massive protest by eminent citizens of the city.

The Chief Post Master General in Bhubaneswar had earlier on two occasions ordered merger of the post office with GPO but the decision was not allowed to materialise due to protest.

“But on May 4, the authorities once again came out with an order directing that the post office would be dismantled and merged with GPO after the working hours of May 12”, informed the city CPI(M) leader Subash Singh who had been vehemently opposing the merger decision.

“This whimsical decision of the authorities had severely hurt the sentiments of the city residents and hundreds of people along with several eminent persons squatted in front of the post office in a dharna on Wednesday.” Mr Singh said.
