Pondicherry: Lieutenant Governor M.M. Lakhera in his New Year Day message said the Union Territory of Pondicherry was poised to hit the fast track of economic development in 2006 through infrastructure development.

Wishing the people of Pondicherry all peace, progress, prosperity and happiness Mr. Lakhera said the New Year dawned on a positive note. Having witnessed the remarkable resilience of human spirit in overcoming the trauma caused by the fury of Nature and the tsunami the New Year could definitely be welcomed with renewed hope and bright prospects.

Mr. Lakhera said that the previous year had seen the nation growing from strength to strength in its economic progress. The boom in Information Technology and communication sector augured well for the future. The Union Territory was also poised to hit the fast track of economic development.

Welfare measures

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that during the last four and half years since the present Government came into being a number of welfare measures were evolved and implemented for the betterment of farmers, merchants, government employees and the people at large. The funds earmarked to Pondicherry under the plans were properly and fully utilised to enhance the status of the people. Mr. Rangasamy recalled how tsunami that struck Pondicherry and Karaikal districts on December 26, 2004 had resulted in loss of more than 600 lives and also destruction of property. However, the Pondicherry Government spared no efforts to rush the relief and aid to the suffering people. Now people had gained the power to face challenges posed by the nature.

Mr. Rangasamy said fishermen resumed their activities and the Government had provided houses, nets and assistance to them. Speaker M.D.R. Ramachandran, Agriculture Minister A. Namassivayam, Local Administration Minister A. Elumalai, Health Minister E. Valsaraj, Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss, Congress MP V. Narayanasamy, Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president P. Shanmugham, Secretary of the Pondicherry State Communist Party of India N. Kalainathan, Secretary of the Pondicherry unit of AIADMK A. Anbalagan MLA, and leaders of various political parties were among those who greeted the people.
