BHUBANESWAR: Commissionerate police on Saturday conducted raids on various hotels in the Capital City and imposed fines on people who were smoking in public places in violation of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003.

The raids as part of a campaign were conducted to prohibit smoking in public places, said Nihar Das, Assistant Commissioner of Police here.

“During past couple of months we have imposed fines on about 200 people who were found to be smoking at bus stops. We will intensify our raids in future,” Mr. Das said.

The punitive actions on smokers have been launched in Capital City even though ban on public smoking came into force couple of years ago.

The State had earlier announced to make Bhubaneswar smoke-free city. Flying squads to impose fines have been constituted. Challans and receipts to collect penalty for violation against COTPA 2003 had already been unveiled.
