Poll violence in the ensuing panchayat election touched a new low when miscreants alleged to be supporters of Nationalist Congress Party legislator Navin Nanda hurled petrol bombs at a police jeep at Pingua in Dhenkanal on Monday.
Two constables, who were sustained serious burns, were shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack.
Brewing tensions at Ward Number 1 and 4 of Nihalprasad under Gandia block went out of control when a group of villagers protested the visit of Mr. Nanda and his supporters near the booth.
The MLA's vehicle was ransacked while his son received injuries in the attack. The MLA took shelter in Nihalprasad Police Station.
Repolling had been ordered at the two booths on Monday when rigging was alleged in those booths.
Soon after the incident, a police team led by Sub Divisional Police Officer Brahmananda Dandapat went to village take stock of the situation.
As the news spread, supporters of the legislator were said to be waiting at Pingua.
They targeted the police team suspecting that the vehicle was carrying ballot boxes.
Meanwhile, a complaint was lodged in Nihalprasad police station accusing that the legislator intended to disturb poll process. Dhenkanal SP Satish Kumar Gajbhiye said, “permission will be sought from the Assembly Speaker to arrest Dhenkanal MLA on charges of hatching criminal conspiracy and hampering poll process.”
The State unit of the NCP raised the issue of deteriorating law and order in view of attack on its legislator in Dhenkanal.
