Supports demand for reserving Lok Sabha, Assembly seats
PUDUCHERRY: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday appealed to the State and Central Governments to come forward to implement a special component plan (SCP) for Muslims and Christians to enhance their socio-economic and educational standards.
Addressing a rally organised by the Puducherry unit of the PMK to highlight the demand for an exclusive 5 per cent quota for Muslims and Christians in education and employment within the 13 per cent reservation earmarked for the Backward Classes, he called for steps to promote the interests of the minorities who were socially, economically and educationally backward.
Dr. Ramadoss said the demand raised by Muslims and Christians seeking due space for them in politics by exclusively earmarking Lok Sabha and Assembly seats should be considered by the State and Central Governments. The PMK was prepared to extend its cooperation in this regard, he added.
He also stressed the need for reserving seats for the minorities for various posts in the local bodies.
Recalling the regional conferences held by the PMK in support of the demand for reservation for Muslims and Christians in education and employment in Tamil Nadu, he commended Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for issuing an ordinance to provide 7 per cent reservation for the minorities.
As all the four southern States had already taken steps to implement reservation for Muslims and Christians, the Puducherry Government should not hesitate to implement the quota system in the Union Territory, Dr. Ramadoss said.
Stating that no legal problem was involved in the issue, he asked Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to seek the Backward Classes Commission’s recommendation before issuing an ordinance to provide exclusive reservation for Muslims and Christians.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi would also back such a move, he said.
