PUDUCHERRY: Members belonging to the PMK on Monday staged a walkout from the Assembly to protest the administration’s decision not to rename the Union Territory as Puducherry.

Raising the issue during the question hour, R.K.R. Anantharaman (PMK) said that despite the Union government’s approval to rename the Union Territory as Puducherry, the territorial administration retained Pondicherry for the town limit. He said it was a clear violation of the Government of India order and sought immediate steps to rectify the “mistake.”

Replying to the remark, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said the decision to retain the Pondicherry name for the town was taken “not to create confusion in the minds of foreign tourists.” Not satisfied with the reply, Mr. Anantharaman, along with his party colleague N. G Pannirselvam, staged a walkout.
