Patna: Demanding the Bihar Government bring a status paper on distribution of relief among the people, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) President Ramvilas Paswan on Monday said the entire State be declared ‘famine-hit’ in the wake of the recent drought situation.
Accusing the Nitish Kumar Government of having failed to reach relief to lakhs of people in 26 of the 38 districts declared ‘calamity hit’ in Bihar, Mr. Paswan told reporters, “The State Government abjectly failed to reach relief to the drought-affected people in 26 districts.”
Demanding that the JD(U)-led Government must bring out a status paper on distribution of relief among the people, the former Union Minister said while the State announced Rs.340 crore subsidy on diesel, the amount distributed among farmers on this front remained a ‘paltry’ Rs.80 to 90 lakh.
Similarly, the Government failed to reach benefits of the crop insurance scheme, suspension of land rent and distribution of foodgrains for the people living below poverty line (BPL) in the declared drought-hit districts, he alleged.
In the light of the magnitude of the problem, the whole State be declared ‘famine-hit’, he reiterated.
