AIADMK has more number in fray than its allies

S. Tamizhselvi and S. Saraswathy, are contesting for chairperson posts of Pondicherry and Karaikal respectivelyWhile DMK has fielded B. Sridevi and Bhuvaneswari in Pondicherry and Karaikal

Pondicherry: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has fielded more number of candidates for the post of chairpersons in the municipal council polls than its allies in the Union Territory.

Its candidates, S. Tamizhselvi and S. Saraswathy, are contesting for chairperson posts of the Pondicherry and Karaikal municipal councils. Similarly, A. M. Krishnamoorthy (who unsuccessfully contested the Assembly poll in Reddiarpalayam constituency as an AIADMK nominee) is contesting for the post in the Oulgaret Municipality.

The Dalit Panthers of India and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (the other constituents of the AIADMK-led front) have finalised their list of candidates for councillors and ward members. The ruling Congress has to ensure that there is no strain in the cordial relations with alliance partners ( as head of the Democratic Progressive Alliance). On the other hand it has to ensure that it does not lose ground while sharing seats with the partners.

At the end of several rounds of talks, the DMK has been let to field its candidate for chairperson post of the Pondicherry Municipality, while Congress nominee N. S. J. Jayabal has filed his nomination for the Oulgaret Municipality. The DMK has also fielded its candidate, Bhuvaneswari, for the chairperson's post in the Karaikal municipality. The CPI had earlier announced its State unit secretary N. Kalainathan as its nominee for the chairman election in Oulgaret. But he did not file the nomination papers on Wednesday the last day for filing the papers.

However, a CPI nominee Ms. A. Vijaya filed her nomination seeking election to the post of chairperson of the Pondicherry Municipality, even as the DMK has fielded its nominee B. Sridevi for the office of chairperson.

The CPI (M) has taken a stand to go it alone and its leader T. Murugan is seeking election to the chairman's post of the Oulgaret Municipality. Another party nominee, T. Ashok Kumar, is contesting for the post in the Mahe Municipality.
