Collectors of respective regions will chair the panels

PUDUCHERRY: District-level monitoring committees have been constituted in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions to monitor the activities of cable televisions. The District Collectors of the respective regions will chair the committees.
Collector G. Ragesh Chandra in a release said the 25th State Information Ministers conference had agreed that an enforcement mechanism should be constituted by framing a monitoring committee for effective implementation of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.
The committee would serve as a forum for the public to lodge complaints about the content aired over the cable television.
It would take action as per the procedure prescribed - review the action taken by authorised officers for enforcement of the Act, bring to the notice of the State and Central governments if any programme is affecting public order or causing widespread resentment in any community, the release said.
It would deal with violations of the programme and advertisement code in the following manner depending on the seriousness of the violation – give an advisory to the channel, issue warning, channel is required to scroll an apology for a specified number of days and broadcast is suspended for a specified time period.
The Lieutenant Governor has constituted the District Level Monitoring Committees for Puducherry and Karaikal.
In Puducherry, Sub/Deputy Collector (Revenue) of the area concerned, Superintendent of Police of area concerned, Principal of Government Women’s Polytechnic, Lawspet, among others would be members of the committee.
The committee in Karaikal would include Senior Superintendent of Police, Revenue Officer, Collectorate, and Principal of Avvaiyar Government College for Women as members, the release said.
