Pahadia takes charge as Governor

A. R. Kidwai given warm send-off by Chief Minister Hooda and colleagues

CHANDIGARH: Renowned Gandhian and senior Congress leader Jagannath Pahadia was on Monday administered the oath of office as the new Governor of Haryana by Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur at a simple ceremony in the Haryana Raj Bhavan here.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, his ministerial colleagues, Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, senior officers of Haryana, Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh and prominent citizens of the city attended the ceremony.

On reaching Chandigarh, Mr. Pahadia, a former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and wife Shanti Devi Pahadia, a former Member of Parliament, were given a warm reception by the Haryana Chief Minister, his colleagues, senior officers and staff of the Haryana Raj Bhavan.

Mr. Pahadia, 77, was born in Bhusawar village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan on January 15, 1932. He is an M.A. LL.B., having studied at Agarwal College, Agra, M.S.J. College, Bharatpur, Maharaja College, Jaipur, and Rajasthan University Law College, Jaipur.

He served as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan from June 6, 1980, to July 14, 1981. He was also a member of the Second Lok Sabha from 1957-62, was elected to the Rajya Sabha in March 1965 and re-elected in March 1966. Member of the Fourth Lok Sabha from 1967-71, Fifth Lok Sabha from 1971-77 and the Seventh Lok Sabha in 1980.

Mr. Pahadia served as Union Deputy Minister for Finance from 1967-69, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture from 1970-71, Deputy Minister for Supply in 1971, Deputy Minister for Communications in 1973-76 and Deputy Minister for Labour in 1976-77. He was also Union Minister of State for Finance in 1980.

Meanwhile, outgoing Governor A. R. Kidwai was accorded a hearty send-off in the morning from the Haryana Raj Bhavan by Mr. Hooda, his colleagues and senior officers.

Dr. Kidwai said that he would cherish the memories of his stint in Haryana all his life and wished more prosperity for the people of Haryana.
