Bhubaneswar: The second international Odissi dance festival organised by city-based cultural organisation Bansi Bilas will be under way at the Kamani auditorium in New Delhi from November 24 to 26.

The event, scheduled to be held every five years, is dedicated to the memory of the Odissi maestro Debaprasad Das. It is being supported by the Tourism Ministry and Sangeet Natak Akademi, said coordinator and Mumbai-based Odissi dancer Leesa Mohanty.

The first edition of the festival was also hosted in the national capital in 2001.

While the last event zoomed in on the contribution of the great masters of the dance form like Pankaj Charan Das, Kelucharan Mohapatra and Debaprasad Das, the coming meet would focus on the new generation gurus and performers, Ms.Leesa said.

    The dimensions

Several exponents of Odissi would deliberate on the dimensions of the dance form, Odissi music and Odissi mardal, the accompanying percussion instrument, during the seminar that would be the most important segment of the event, she added.

While veteran dancers and choreographers like Sonal Mansingh, Durga Charan Ranbir, Minati Mishra, Gangadhar Pradhan and Madhavi Mudgal will present lecture-demonstrations, versatile vocalist and music composer Ramahari Das and mardal exponent Dhaneswar Swain would offer demonstrations on Odissi music and mardal respectively.

Eminent scholar and former Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi president D.N.Patnaik, dance critics Leela Venkatraman and Shanta Serbjeet Singh and Malayasian Odissi exponent Ramli Ibrahim are some of the speakers of the seminar.

The performers include Mansingh, Ranbir, Padma Shri Kiran Segal, Madhavi Mudgal, Rajika Puri, Sangeeta Das, Ramli's Sutra Dance Theatre and Protima Bedi's Nrityagram Dance Ensemble.
