Businessmen, particularly of non-Odia communities in several parts of the Millennium city on Thursday downed their shutters and squatted on roads protesting against what they called “unchecked criminal activities” against them.
Burning tyres and raising slogans at Mata Matha, Howrah Motors Square, Mani Sahu Square, Buxi Bazaar and Ranihat, the angry businessmen demanded proper security and immediate arrest of the criminals who are still at large after firing at a city businessman and his son at Mata Matha on Wednesday night.
However, when the city DCP S. Praveen Kumar assured the agitators that the criminals involved in last night’s firing would be detected soon and appropriate legal action would be initiated, the businessmen called off their road blockade. Traffic in main thoroughfares of these areas was affected for nearly three hours in the morning. According to reports, Umed Chand Baruah (55) and his son Vineet (25) were fired at from close range around 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday when the father-son duo were closing their shop at Mata Matha under Mangalabag police station. While Vineet died at SCB medical college and hospital just minutes after he was brought to the hospital, Umed is now fighting for life at a private hospital .
