Five months after the death of Swami Nigamanand, his guru Swami Shivanand began an indefinite fast on Friday demanding immediate stoppage of quarrying in the Ganga here.

Sixty-five-year-old Swami Shivanand, founder of the Matri Sadan Ashram, told reporters here that he would not break his fast until the State Government issues a notification stopping quarrying in the Ganga. Earlier, Haridwar Administration officials tried to convince him to reconsider his decision but failed.

In June, Swami Nigamanand had died after fasting for nearly four months over the same demand.
