Six days after more than 100 women were reportedly sterilised in a single day at a health camp in Malda district without being provided basic health care facilities, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices on Monday to the State Health Department and the District Magistrate over the issue and called for replies within six weeks.
At a health camp organised at Manichak Village Health Centre on February 5, the women who had undergone sterilisation surgery were left in the open in semi-conscious state.
“After surgery, the women were left in open outside the health centre for recuperation. Some of them were sent to their homes by rickshaws even without even keeping them under mandatory period of observation post-surgery,” a press release issued by the NHRC said.
“The Commission has taken cognisance on the basis of a complaint and media reports relating to the incident” on official of the NHRC told The Hindu from New Delhi.
He said that the members of the Commission also saw the video footage of the health camp before issuing the notices.
