PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration has decided to name the new women and child hospital coming up at Ellaipillaichavady after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy and Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam told this to reporters at a joint press conference, after inspecting the construction of the building.

Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi would inaugurate the building in two months, Mr. Narayanasamy said. The hospital would be a model in terms of its size and facilities, he said, adding that though the project got delayed, it would be one of the biggest achievements of the Congress government in Puducherry.

Mr. Vaithilingam said that the 700-bed hospital would cost the exchequer around Rs. 50 crore and the finishing works were fast progressing. Home Minister E. Valsaraj, who also holds the Health portfolio, and Public Works Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan were present.
