BHUBANESWAR: The fourth annual edition of the Naveen Kalakar National Odissi Utsav will be held at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (USM) auditorium here from June 8 to 10. The event is being hosted by city-based Devdasi Nrutya Mandir in association with the USM, Orissa's premiere college of performing arts, Department of Culture of Orissa Government, Orissa Samskruti Academy and Orissa Modern Art Gallery.
Festival coordinator Jagabandhu Jena informed that the event has been planned to spot out budding talents and highlight them as soloists. “This is the second festival of its kind in India after Mumbai's 60-year-old Kal ke Kalakar that seeks to promote young artistes,” Jena said and added that the initiative has received rave response from the budding Odissi dancers across India and even from abroad.
The festival confers the title of Odissi Jyoti on all those who score more than 70 per cent marks from the jury for their performances; Jena explained and informed that Odissi gurus, senior dancers and dance critics comprise the jury. Dancers in the age group of 18 to 30 (senior group) will be eligible to compete for the title while eligibility for the junior group would be 10 to 17, it was learnt.
A State-level Odissi dance competition among the young artistes would form a part of the three-day festival, informed the hosts. Muscat-based Non-Resident Oriya and Odissi dance promoter A.K.Parija has instituted three cash awards for the top three performers in the competition, they added.
While the topper would receive Rs.10, 000, the runners up and the third rank holder would get Rs.5, 000 and Rs.3, 000 respectively, it was learnt.
Dancers belonging to the State and in the age group of 18 to 30 would be eligible to participate in the competition.
Application forms for participation in the national level festival and State-level competition shall be available at the Orissa Modern Art Gallery located at 132, Forest Park in Bhubaneswar from May 10 onwards, informed Jena who can be contacted on cell number 98610-64198.
