Suravi Samman to be conferred on Odissi dancers Aruna Mohanty and Dipti Routray
BHUBANESWAR: The 8th annual Ekamra National Dance and Music Festival, to be hosted by the city-based Suravi Odissi Dance Institution, will be under way at the Jayadev Bhawan in the capital from June 1 to 4.
Odissi dancer Aruna Mohanty and Cuttack-based Odissi dancer Dipti Routray will be conferred the Suravi Samman instituted by the hosts for the year during the festival.
Suravi’s founder-director and young Odissi guru Pitambar Biswal said that Suravi Samman was instituted last year to honour two prominent Odissi dancers, each belonging to the styles of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Debaprasad Das.
While Sujata Mohapatra and Sangeeta Dash were honoured last year for the two styles respectively, Aruna and Dipti were representing the two styles this year respectively.
The four-day festival would feature eminent flutist Mohini Mohan Patnaik, mardal percussion instrument exponent Dhaneswar Swain and budding Odissi vocalist Sur Sarita Rout as solo performers in the music segment, Mr. Biswal said.
The dance segment would have Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Odissi, he added.
Besides, the two awardees -- Aruna Mohanty and Dipti Routray -- the Odissi dancers scheduled to perform include Amanda Geroy from America, Munmun Chakraborty from Odissi Research Centre, Gayatri Ranbir from Guru Durga Charan Ranbir’s Nruytayana Dance Institution and Sangya Sucharita from Suravi -- all Bhubaneswar-based institutions.
Padmapriya from Hyderabad, Komal Gujarati from Pune and Konkana Bhattacharya from Kolkata would represent Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and Kathak as soloists, Mr. Biswal said.
