PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi on Wednesday stressed the need for creating new townships in Puducherry region as a solution to the problems arising out of the increase in urban population.
“Practical analysis shows that there is a fuelling demand for new townships in places such as Puducherry with limited land resource and housing shortage,” he said while speaking at a private function at Periyakattupalayam, near Ariyankuppam.
Talking about the importance of developing new townships, he said housing and construction sector was considered not only as a social necessity, but also an important factor contributing to economic growth. Every rupee invested in this sector, resulted in 78 paise being added to gross domestic product, he added.
Next to agriculture, the construction sector employed a large number of work force, and more than 200 industries were directly or indirectly dependent on this vital sector, he noted.
Adherence to rules
He asked the promoters of townships to adhere to rules and regulations. The topography of townships should provide space for creating a healthy residential climate.
It should also be their endeavour to make optimum use of natural resources for sustainable development, besides bringing the residents close to nature.
