A 15-year-old Kolkata boy scripted his own abduction in order to extract money from his father. The police were able to nab the boy here on Tuesday.

The boy, a Class X student at a southern Kolkata school, was reported missing from Sunday morning. His father filed a complaint with the police.

The father received four calls from the same phone number, demanding a ransom of Rs.15 lakh. On Tuesday morning, the boy rang up from a public booth claiming he had managed to escape. The father rescued the boy from the bustling Esplanade area in central Kolkata.

However, it was revealed during police questioning that the boy along with two friends had made up the story to extract some money.

The boy along with a friend left for the seaside town of Digha on Sunday — the day his family received the first ransom call. This was followed by repeated calls from another friend.  The police managed to trace the latter's mobile phone and arrested him.

Until then, the boy had been claiming he had escaped from his kidnappers. But when the police cross-examined him with his friend's version, he accepted everything.

South 24 Parganas Superintendent of Police L.N. Meena said the boy will be produced in a juvenile court on Wednesday.
