PUDUCHERRY: Minister for Social Welfare M. Kandasamy on Wednesday has reiterated his stand that the Government will provide good quality saris and lungis instead of purchasing them from the Pondicherry State Weavers’ Cooperative Society for free distribution to the poor for Deepavali. Shortly after distributing assistance to 518 beneficiaries belonging to 21 Assembly segments at a function here,

Mr. Kandasamy said there was no question of going back on the decision to provide quality clothes to the people belonging to below poverty line. He also denied that the move would go against the interest of weavers.

As the Government had been earmarking Rs.469.20 per set under the free clothe scheme, the Minister wanted to ensure that the beneficiaries got quality clothes.
