PUDUCHERRY: A key member of a gang involved in more than 15 theft cases in Puducherry was on Monday arrested by the police. The accused Kumar belonged to a gang which targeted persons withdrawing money from banks. Addressing a press conference here, Superintendent of Police (North) N. T Sivadasan said the gang operated in a very professional manner. The gang would watch banks to identify customers who withdraw money and then follow on motorbikes.
“They would identify the person who put the money in the sidebox of the motorbike. The gang would follow the person. When the person stopped the bike to make a purchase, one of the members of the gang would open the box and lift the money.
“The box would be closed so that the owner would not suspect any theft,” he said. The gang would decamp with the money in seconds, he said adding several cases were not reported and some of them came to light during interrogation of the accused.
In one reported case, the accused stole Rs 6.5 lakh from a person at Mudaliarpet recently, he added. A team had left fro Chennai to arrest other members of the gang, he added.
