Senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Gautam Deb was served a notice by the West Bengal police hours after he alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s family members have amassed wealth amounting to crores of rupees. The matter came to light on Wednesday and Mr. Deb declined to appear before the police citing political commitments. A team of his lawyers gave a letter to Bidhannagar Police stating that he was busy with the ongoing polls and will appear after the elections are over.

“He has declined to appear before the police today as he is busy with political commitments. The police have been informed and he will appear at a suitable date,” Mr. Deb counsel Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya who is also a CPI (M) leader said.

Mr. Deb, who is the secretary of North 24 Parganas district committee of the CPI (M) and a also a Central Committee (CC) member of the party had alleged on Tuesday that Ms. Banerjee’s family members have purchased properties worth around Rs. 20 crore in recent years.

He was served a “witness notice” by the Bidhannagar Police asking him to appear for questioning on Wednesday in a case related to the Saradha chit fund scam. But he refused to appear.

Meanwhile, another CPI (M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, the secretary of CPI-M in South 24 Parganas district committee and a candidate of the party from the prestigious Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency has also said that he was summoned to appear before the Bidhannagar police on Thursday. He was also summoned in context to the Saradha scam.

“The summon is politically motivated and is an attempt to harass me,” Mr Chakraborty said, adding that he will appear before the police after polls.

“What have the police been doing for a year? Why are they calling me now when I am campaigning?,” the CPI(M) leader said pointing out that the complaint was filed a year ago.

Elections on the Lok Sabha seats in both North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas, including Jadavpur, will be held on May 12.
