Seeks enforcement of Goondas Act

PONDICHERRY: The founder of the Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC) and former Home minister P. Kannan has alleged that law and order had collapsed in the Union Territory and people were feeling insecure. He cited a recent incident of assault on a group of girls from West Bengal by intruders in a private lodge to buttress his claim. The girls were in Pondicherry to participate in the national sub-junior table tennis tournament here.

Mr. Kannan said that his party would move the Madras High Court through a public interest litigation petition to probe the incident.

The Chief Minister's claim that Pondicherry was peaceful and that law and order was fine was simply untenable, he said. He called for enforcement of the Goondas Act, recalling that the Centre had cleared the proposal for enactment of the Act when he was Home Minister.
