JAIPUR: The administration in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan has asked those found involved in siphoning off funds meant for the MGNREGS to pay back the amounts or face prosecution.

The anomalies were discovered in procurement of material worth Rs.1.34 crore in Rastapal Gram Panchayat of Simalwada Panchayat Samiti over a period of three years. The amount to be recovered from the sarpanch, secretary and those who have supplied the material component for the works comes to Rs.64.80 lakh.

This is not the first time that the district administration in Dungarpur is making the swindlers pay. Earlier, in Jharni Gram Panchayat, in a case involving the largest amount of corruption in the MGNREGA till then, an amount of Rs.58 lakh was recovered from the then sarpanch, secretary and firms which supplied or claimed to have supplied the material.

An inquiry committee led by a three-member team of accountants, appointed by the Collector, finally confirmed the frauds in Rastapal and identified those involved after verification of record and field visits. Prior to the inquiry, District Collector Puran Chandra Kishan and the MGNREGA State Director, Ram Niwas Mehta, had personally visited the place to look into the complaints. The leakage took place over three years in cases of orders given without tenders for supply of material for 31 works.
