Odisha’s internationally acclaimed English poet Jayanta Mahapatra has donated his precious and personal collection of about 4,000 books and journals besides the prestigious mementos and awards to the library of Fakir Mohan University of Baleswar.
The University sources informed that Mahapatra served the Fakir Mohan College – that is now upgraded to a University – as a lecturer in physics and he has been intimately associated with the literary life of the town for the past four decades since then.
“The renowned writer expressed his desire to donate his priceless collection to the University and the town that is famous as the birthplace of Fakir Mohan Senapati, revered as the father of modern Odia literature”, stated well-known writer Brajanath Rath of Baleswar town.
The Syndicate of the University welcomed Mahapatra’s decision and the Department of English of the University was advised to transfer the gifts of the poet to the University’s library. The University has decided to preserve the poet’s gifts in a special section that would be named as Jayant Mahapatra heritage Gallery, it was learnt.
The awards, medals and mementos that Mahapatra has donated include the Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi Award, Sarala Puraskar and Utkal Bharati Samman.
