CUTTACK: Irate mobs torched at least four iron ore-laden trucks and paralysed Cuttack-Chandbali State Highway for over five hours on Monday following the death of a person in a road accident near Salepur, about 30 kms from here.
Shankarshan Mallick (32) of nearby Tilakana panchayat was crushed to death on the spot while his wife Sanjukta and five-year-old son Babuli were grievously injured when an iron ore laden heavy lorry hit the motorcycle in which they were travelling towards Cuttack around 11.30 a.m.
The injured mother and son were immediately shifted to SCB medical college and hospital here where the doctors are claiming the duo to be critical but out of danger.
Soon after the news spread in the locality, hundreds of local residents hit the road; blocking the State Highway at several places and attacking all the trucks carrying iron ore. They were restive since Sunday as another youth was also killed near Kendupatna on the same road.
“The furious mob were so enraged that they immediately set fire to the 10-wheeler lorries and squatted on the road resisting the police to remove the dead body from the spot”, said a local police officer.
The mob demanded ban on iron ore laden trucks passing through the road and immediate repair of the State Highway which has become unmotorable.
“At least four trucks were set on fire and few other vehicles were damaged as the mob went on rampage for over an hour. We have registered separate cases of accident and torching of trucks and investigations are on”, said the Cuttack (Rural) SP R. K. Mishra adding that no one is arrested yet.
Mishra informed that normal traffic on the road resumed after 5 p.m. on the day after the agitators were assured that their demands would be fulfilled soon.
“The police, including Commissionerate of police and the district administration would jointly ensure that iron ore trucks would be banned travelling on the road”, the SP informed.
