‘Strong bonding between the countries due to blood relations’

Lucknow: The President of Mauritius, Anerood Jugnauth, on Wednesday said that his country shared a kinship with India and promised to do everything possible to help put an end to the global scourge of terrorism.

“Though we are lucky not to have any such problem so far and hope never to experience it in our country, we condemn terrorism and would do whatever possible to help put an end to it,” Mr. Jugnauth, who is on a private visit to the Uttar Pradesh capital, told newspersons here.

The sooner the problem of terrorism is rooted out, the better it would be for all human beings, he said spelling out his country’s policy on terrorism and expressing solidarity with terror victims.

“Mother India”

Describing the strong bonding between his country and India as “blood relations”, Mr. Jugnauth said they were more than diplomatic ties.

“We call it Mother India. 70 per cent of Mauritian population consists of people of Indian origin including both Hindus and Muslims who had migrated there as labourers,” he said and recalled how former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had once described his country as “little India”.

He also made a mention of the India-funded projects in Mauritius and the help it receives from the country in key sectors like education, technology and agriculture.

Replying to a question if regional chauvinism existed in Mauritius, the President said despite having a mix of many races, religions and cultures, there is no such problem in his country.

The Mauritian President, who is here along with his wife Sarojini Jugnauth to take part in a programme organised by a private school, said education in his country right from the pre-primary level is free and even university education is highly subsidised with free transport facilities.

Stressing on the need to bring quality and values to education, he said once there is a realisation that all inhabitants of the globe are one family, there would be no room for conflicts in the world and peace would prevail. “Helping people come as near to perfection as possible is not good for one country but to all human beings of the world,” he said. -- PTI
