The mystery disease which has killed several hundred chickens in many parts of Manipur has spread in Tamenglong district in an alarming way, reports said. Tribal activists and some organisations in the district are demanding intervention of the government veterinarians to save the chicken. Most of the domesticated indigenous chickens had died of this mystery disease in the district.

However, reports said that veterinarians are yet to move in as there is no instruction from the government. The activists are demanding identification of the disease and preventive measures. The massive casualty of chickens will be a crippling blow to the economically backward tribals in the district.

In the absence of government explanation it is speculated that the killer disease is spread by the migratory birds which flock the forest and small lakes and water bodies in this mountainous district. Migratory birds from as far as Siberia come to this district. Skilled poachers have been catching hundreds of birds round the year.

There are also reports of deaths of chickens from other parts of the State.
