PUDUCHERRY: Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University J.A.K. Tareen was conferred the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant by Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh on behalf of the NCC Group Headquarters, Puducherry, on Wednesday.
Thanking the Union government, the Ministry of Defence and the NCC for bestowing the honour on him, Mr. Tareen promised support to all NCC activities, and said that he would shoulder the responsibility of promoting the NCC in every institution affiliated to the university.
“I know the significance and honour associated with the rank and the uniform, because I was an NCC Rifles cadet myself,” revealed Mr. Tareen, who was in uniform at the event. Recalling his days as a cadet, he described his own training as one that changed his personality and lifestyle and taught him discipline.
NCC training is important for the youth. It is the one institution that unites the youth, and inculcates in them, a sense of responsibility for the country, he said.
“When in uniform, you are an Indian. There are no language or regional differences,” Mr. Tareen said, while labelling the armed forces of the country as among the best in the world. Mr. Tareen said that every youngster must aspire to be part of the forces or the NCC.
Noting that the Honorary Colonel Commandant rank is bestowed upon a few for exemplary contribution to the cause of the nation, Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh said that it was a matter of pride that Mr. Tareen has been conferred this honour twice in his lifetime so far.
Mr. Singh went on to list Mr. Tareen’s achievements as Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University, who single-handedly restored the past glory of the university in just three years and as a geological scientist.
Mr..Tareen has also played a proactive role as Chief Executive Officer of South Asia Foundation of SAARC and as a member of the University Grants Commission, Mr. Singh said.
“Under his guidance, the Pondicherry University has come to be recognised as one of the leading universities in the country, and it is for all these contributions to the field of Higher Education that he was also awarded Padma Shri recently,” Mr. Singh said.
The NCC, which is committed to creating a motivated and socially committed human resource, has found an inspiration and guiding force in Mr. Tareen, Mr. Singh said.
