SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh on Saturday celebrated the 59th Himachal Day, which marks the occasion of the merger of 29 erstwhile princely states in the region on April 15, 1948.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said the State had made important gains, topping the field of educational facilities and second in the social sector.

He said the State had more than 15,000 educational institutions today compared to just 331 institutions in 1948 and the length of roads had also increased from 228 km to 27,000 km.
