DEHRA DUN: The Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) has been selected for the national award for women welfare through application of science and technology for the year 2008.

Announcing this here on Sunday, HESCO patron Anil Joshi said the award given by the Department of Science and Technology comprising of a citation and cash prize of Rs.10 lakh.

The organisation has bagged the award for sustained efforts in the field of improving the financial and social condition of women through easily acceptable scientific interventions in the remote villages of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and the North East.

The latest intervention has been of the skills in bakery and food processing that has helped several rural women produce quality bakery products that are finding a ready market in the villages, Dr.Joshi said.
