JAIPUR: A help centre on Value Added Tax (VAT) will be set up here at the Rajasthan office of the Confederation of Indian Industry to address the problems and doubts of the trade and industry on VAT, introduced in the State from April 1 this year. Two senior functionaries of the State Government's Commercial Tax Department will man the centre.

The help centre is scheduled to start functioning from June 23. P.S. Mehra, Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, will inaugurate the premises which will be functional on every Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Ram Karan Singh, Additional Commissioner (Tax) and H.L. Pandey, Deputy Commissioner (Appeals), Jaipur II, will operate the help centre.

"There is an urgent need for industry and trade in Rajasthan to understand the VAT rules and procedures to facilitate a smooth transition to the new tax regime," according to Shripal Choudhari, Chairman of CII Rajasthan. "The centre will further strengthen the bilateral relationship between the Government and industries and bring together stakeholders to meet and exchange ideas, views and understand the rules and procedures on VAT," Mr. Choudhari said.

"This was the most opportune time to introduce VAT but at the same time there is a great need to have this kind of supportive initiative," Mr. Choudhari noted.
