Jhadu Huika alias Jagdish (28), a hardcore Maoist from Narayanpatna area of Koraput district surrendered to Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) Awinash Kumar on Wednesday.
Jhadu himself confessed that he was involved in six murders, in Narayanpatna, Bandhugaon and Laxmipur areas while he was with the Maoist organisation. The murders of civilians in which he was involved included the killings of Jami rajesndra Prasad, Salu Praska, Sukra Huika, Rabindra Bidika, sapru Sirika and Ghasi Kendruka.
He was also involved in several other cases of Maoist violence that included blasting of mobile communication towers, blasting of roads, digging of roads during Maoist bandh calls etc, police sources said. He was an active member of the Srikakulam-Koraput divisional committee under Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of outlawed CPI (Maoist) organisation.
He had been trained in used of different kinds of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). While in the Maoist organisation he was wielding a .303 rifle. Recently he was the leader of the Maoists operating in Gorkhajhol area of Narayanpatna block. Jhadu also hails from Gorkhajhola village. As per the confession of the surrendered Maoists, he had become part of the violent organisation via the controversial tribal organisation Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) of Narayanpatna area. He had joined the CMAS in 2008 and under the leadership of Nachika Linga had got involved in several cases of violence. As per police records of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, Nachika is a most wanted Maoist commander who also heads the CMAS. Later Jhadu had graduated to the Maoist organisation and had got involved in crimes like murders.
As per him, continuous surrender of Maoists and CMAS activists from Narayanpatna area made him think about surrendering. He was also impressed by the fact that the surrendered Maoists as well as CMAS activists were being properly rehabilitated with the active support of district police and the children of CMAS activists who had left education had again joined schools. As he had started to get disillusioned from the Maoist violence and wanted to lead a normal life, he preferred to surrender.
Speaking to The Hindu , the Koraput SP said, Jhadu would also be rehabilitated as per the norms of the government He urged other Maoists and their supporters to surrender and start leading a normal life. Police would help surrendered Maoists even for their marriage, education of children and proper rehabilitation through provision of employment through developmental schemes, Mr Kumar added.
