For field training facilities

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Cabinet has cleared requests from the Army for land in Bikaner district's Phugal area for a field training facility and another large area of land in Jaisalmer district for use as a firing range. The Cabinet has cleared the proposals with the rider that rehabilitation of the displaced should be carried out in keeping with the Government of India norms. The Cabinet decision follows acceptance of the proposals from the South West Command for land at a recent civil-military liaison meeting. The Phugal land alone measures a whooping 1.39-lakh hectares.

According to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore, a Cabinet sub-committee has been entrusted with overseeing the rehabilitation of residents of Sardoli in Phugal, who would be displaced by the arms training facility coming up there. There are 9,000 families to be affected, he informed.

The other project, a manoeuvring field firing range at Shitigarh in Jaisalmer district, would account for displacement of 309 families in the area. The land involved is 24,000 hectares. The clearance of the firing rangeland was on the condition that the ONGCL, which has oil exploration activities going on in the area, would not have any objection, Mr. Rathore said.
