Four persons arrested

Koraput: Four persons were arrested here on Thursday on the charge of circulating fake currency notes and gold coins.

The accused persons were Prafulla Kumar Paikray, 50, of Nayagarh, Sk. Asbak, 45, of Koraput, Damodar Nanda, 38, of Kendrapada and Raju Podh, 32, of Sambalpur.

The town police busted the racket when the accused persons were allegedly preparing to lure customers in a local lodge.

Modus operandi

They were allegedly showing customers an original Canadian $ 50 gold coin and while bargaining for the ultimate cost they were handing over duplicate coins of similar size, colour and design.

The accused persons confessed to selling each coin for Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 25,000 to customers, Sarat Chandra Sahu, OIC of the police station, said.

They had been staying in the lodge for several days by producing false identity and cheating people in the town, he said. They were also dealing with fake currency notes. The police seized two original and two duplicate gold coins, a few duplicate Rs. 100 notes, turmeric powder, four mobile phones and a holy book from them.

The accused persons were allegedly involved in such cases in various parts of the State and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
