People from all areas light Bhogi bonfire

BERHAMPUR: The city has started to bear colourful look and mood as the Telugu and Oriya populace have joined hands for Pongal festivities.

Similar festivity is all around in south Orissa districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Around 30 per cent of the population in these districts is Telugus having family ties in adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Children and elders of all linguistic communities were found to be enjoying the ’Bhogi’ bonfire to ward off the cold winter chill in the wee hours on Wednesday at almost all streets of the city.

At several places the young girls got together to perform the united worship of Lord Krishna as part of the ‘Gobbi’ ritual. They were dressed in new attires and had decorated themselves with flowers and ornaments. They called themselves ‘Gopikas’ and travelled from house to house as part of Pongal festivities. The JCI ladies club organised one such ‘Gobbi’ get together at military lane.
