Ganjam district became the men’s champion in the State- level senior handball tournament held at Khallikote autonomous college stadium in the city.

The women’s team from Jagatsinghpur district lifted the winner’s trophy in this tournament. Teams from Keonjhar became runners’ up in both men and women category.

Finals of this tournament were played under flood light on Sunday night. The men’s final match was played between teams from Ganjam and Keonjhar districts. Ganjam won the match with points 33:25.

In the women’s final Jagatsinghpur team defeated the Keonjhar team with scores 11:9.

The Jagatsinghpur team had reached the final of women’s category by defeating the Ganjam team. The girls from Keonjhar had won over their rivals from Cuttack in the semifinal to reach the final. In the men’s category Ganjam had defeated Jajpur and Keonjhar had defeated Jagatsinghpur in the semifinals.

G. Sandeep of Ganjam team was adjudged best player of the tournament. Former union minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu attended the concluding ceremony as chief guest.

This tournament had been organised by Ganjam district handball association.

According to adviser of the association Prakash Chandra Panda, during past few years handball is picking up among the youth of the State. He felt this game can have mass following as its infrastructure cost is low and can be played anywhere including rural areas.
