Congress camp bears a forlorn look after its performance dips
Celebration broke out at the Biju Janata Dal office here after the party swept both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections on Friday.
On Friday morning after initial trends started indicating that BJD was going to register an emphatic win, party cadres started gathering at the party office in large numbers. Soon, the deafening sound of fire crackers and drum beating reverberated and BJD workers were seen dancing hysterically while waving party flag.
At his residence, Naveen Patnaik was greeted by party leaders. Showing the victory sign, Mr. Patnaik said, “BJD has not won elections, rather it is a victory of 4 crore people of Odisha.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party office also witnessed celebration on its premise. While party workers came out to the street shouting slogans for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, State BJP leaders gave mixed reactions as party could not perform in the State as per expectations.
Despondency ruled Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters at Master Canteen here after the grand-old party’s performance dipped disastrously in both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. While the party failed to open its account in Lok Sabha election, its strength in Assembly was limited to below 20. Except some party office executives, no frontline leaders were seen at the office.
In the assembly election, OPCC president Jayadev Jena, Congress Chief Whip Prasad Harichandan and senior Congress leader Lalatendu Mohapatra had to bite the dust.
In Lok Sabha elections, Union Minster and Congress Campaign Committee chief for Odisha Srikant Jena, former Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang, former Chief Minister Hemanand Biswal, former Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu and former Union Minister Bhakta Charan Das lost.
