Rourkela Development Forum, a citizens' organisation, on Wednesday alleged that the State government was indifferent towards development of the Rourkela -- widely known as Steel City in the State.
In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Secretary, the RDF observed that the Rourkela Municipality should have been upgraded into the Rourkela Municipal Corporation a long back.
It was urged to merge suburban areas such as Jagda, Jhirpani, South Rourkela, Kalunga-Vedvyas-Kuarmunda with the municipality to make it a bigger civic body, but the State government had not paid any heed to the demand, said members of the forum. “According to 2001 Census, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were considered as municipal corporation areas, while Rourkela was left out.
But in later course, surprisingly Berhampur which was considered a Notified Area Council as per 2001 Census was upgraded into a corporation with inclusion of 13 gram panchayats and Rourkela has vanished from the list,” the RDF pointed out in the memorandum.
The Steel City should be covered under the Rajiv Awas Yojna, it said.
