Challenges decision to appoint probe panel

CUTTACK: Former Assembly Speaker Sarat Kar on Thursday appeared before the High Court and personally argued his case challenging the State Government's decision to appoint a judicial commission of enquiry into the alleged recruitment scam and irregularities in purchase of computers in the Assembly secretariat.

While the Advocate General Bijay Krushna Mahanti questioned about the maintainability of the case, Kar vociferously argued saying the State Government has no power to institute a judicial commission over any matter pertaining to the state assembly.

The HC bench of Justice I M Quddusi and Justice A K Parichha however, posted the case to be heard next on February 28.

The Naveen Patnaik government in 2005 had appointed former judge of Orissa HC Justice C R Pal to probe into the alleged irregularities committed by the Assembly secretariat during 2003 when Kar, the then BJD leader was the speaker. Kar in the meantime joined Congress
