Enraged over killing of a man by a wild boar, villagers set two mechanized boats on fire and ransacked a forest range office near Gahirmatha forest range in Kendrapara district on Friday.
The incident took place at Sansarpatia under Gahirmatha forest range.
The victim identified as Priti Bhushan Mandal (62) was attacked by wild-boar in the morning.
Villagers immediately got united and vent their anger on the Forest Department.
“Mechanised boats meant for patrolling on sea inside Gahirmatha Sanctuary were set on fire. A bike was also damaged. Besides, the range office was ransacked,” said Trilochan Debta, divisional forest officer of Bhadrak who is charge of Rajkanagar Mangrove (Wildlife) forest division.
Staff of forest range office were taken under hostage by irate villagers. Later police team reached the spot and rescued the forest staff. A platoon of police force was still camping at the spot.
Sources said timber mafia and villagers who are involved in smuggling of forest resources, instigated people to attack on forest officials.
